Creator or Organizer

October 2, 2007

Vygotsky’s idea of a distant teacher was one did not micro manage the instruction but instead allowed the student to create their own learning. The teacher instead designs instruction that allows the student to come to their own ideas about the learning taking place.

So a teacher will design or organize situations that students will be exposed to current information or “knowledge” about a subject. Then the students are posed questions or situations that allow create their own mental conceptions or “knowledge”

Actually the notion of “distant teacher” is one Vygostsky apparently uses when talking about mentor/learner relationships. The tendency is for the learner to become “too much like” the mentor and a wise teacher will make sure that the learner is exposed to other teachings from somebody not directly associated with the mentor — even somebody with antithetical views.
